Puerto Escondido, a small surf town in south side of the state of Oaxaca is no more the best kept secret of Mexico. in the past, these oceans, the beautiful hilly landscapes and the pretty sunsets were enjoyed mostly by surfers and locals. Today tourists from all over the world, the digital nomads and spiritual seekers visit Puerto Escondido and even call this their new home.
and before I go any further ….. These are just my views and in no way should be generalized or associated with any organizations or individual opinions. what makes a place truly amazing is the people who live there and the kind, friendly and happy people of Puerto Escondido do not disappoint. Everyone here ( mostly everyone!!) is very friendly, ready to get into a conversation, will not miss out on any chance to help others, very welcoming to anyone coming to PE. You will be surprised and I have read posts where people find their lost passports, wallets, laptops and even ‘that guy‘ she met one morning while walking the beach - all on social media groups!!! That’s how much everyone is willing to connect and help here. Sweet! Isn’t it?
its Ok in PE of offer others to share a taxi if they are waiting for one. If perfectly fine to share tables in the restaurants - in fact many of the restaurants here have ’Common Table’ concept and the best part : the wifi here is not so great and will see people conversing over dinner ( and not checking their phones all the time). In the few weeks that I stayed in Puerto Escondido, I made friends with several locals and folks traveling from around the world - everyone had unique experiences and stories to share.
Sunsets - yes, that's a thing here in Puerto Escondido- and in fact it’s a big deal!!
The day I reached here in La Punta, I checked with my host about things to do nearby : the 1st thing she mentioned was ” it’s sunset time in 30 mins so head out to Punta Zicatela and enjoy the good vibes and views! “ and I am glad I followed that. One of the most amazing sunsets with skydivers floating in the air- ready to land somewhere close. And same evening I ran into a couple of folks at dinner who were skydiving that day.
Every evening people gather on Punta Zicatela to enjoy this pretty view of sun setting into the ocean and it’s amazing view.
People come here with their pets and families and friends. It’s fun to watch those dogs also making new friends and jumping into the ocean. There are people performing and practicing their skills like paying music instrument or the fire ball shows. There are people also selling their homemade health food like brownies and protein balls and more. People practicing yoga and meditation. And as the sun goes down - either they head back home or it’s head towards La Punta for some great cocktails and food. * Watch out for my next blog on the best places to eat and drink in Puerto Escondido
Puerto Escondido is also blessed with nature best gift with beautiful beaches and mountains. The beaches on the south side tip - Zicatela is a surfers paradise with waves for every height - for beginners to experts. These beaches to the centro are great for water activities, boating, fishing , swimming , snorkeling and even diving. There is a great PADI dive center here with amazing instructors and reasonable prices if you are planning to get a dive certification
its Whale watching season here from Oct - March. you can easily find a tour and spot some whales, dolphins , turtles and Manta Rays in the wild oceans - here’s my trip report on one of those tours
Practice some yoga , meditation or even participate in cacao or tezmacal ceremonies. you will find yoga centers in many places in the town and some of them have sunrise or sunset sessions on the beach. The sessions gets more inspiring with the live classical music - it’s nice to see musician playing traditional musical instruments from around the world! There are cacao ceremonies performed in several places during then new moon and full moon nights.

Cacao Ceremonies are a celebratory ritual that opens the heart through the use of cacao
The restaurants in La Punta, many of them still have a unfinished ( and only sand) flooring, with signs of “no shirt, no slippers , no problem”. You can walk in to any restaurant or bar , bare feet and in your swimwear with no issues. You will also be entertained by LIVE music in all the restaurants here

I’m retiring. Do you know apartment for rent in the area? And how much? Your respond will be appreciated.
