Many tourists and locals do day trips from Puerto Escondido to Mazunte and Zipolite. Here’s my trip report ( and other options to commute between Puerto Escondido and Mazunte / Zipolite)
The Cheaper Option
There have been questions on some forums about renting and riding a scooter from PE to Mazunte. I suggest that's not a good idea at all - Too many buses and vehicles on the highway and its a safety concern. Plus Scooters have a small fuel capacity so you'll need to make frequent stops tore-fuel and also carry a fuel container, Just in same. Rather why not sure do what locals do...
Take a colectivo to Cento - hotel San Juan (10 peso) or a taxi ( about 50-100 peso)
From Hotel San Juan you will find “Delfines“ bus to San Antonio ( 35 peso). make sure you let the driver know that you would like to get down at San Antonio. He will let you off in front of the xoxo store in San Antonio
From xoxo store at San Antonio take a local colectivo to Mazunte and zipolite ( 15 Peso) or taxi (150 peso). I could not find the schedule but saw buses leaving hotel San Juan every 30 mins. I assume it will be the same in the return journey.
Fast and Convenient - Taxi will charge you 1200 Peso each way.
PLUS Mezcal Factory Tour - if taking a Taxi-You can also request for a stop at the local mezcal factory for a tour ( additional charges may apply). I didn’t think of it earlier but it’s a good idea. Individual tours to the factory are about 1000 peso/person
