A way-too-cool backpacking staycation journey through my lens

It’s been years since my last backpacking or a solo trip but this year, with some remote work duties , I had an opportunity to take off for a few weeks to do what I dreamt of for a few years now - a solo backpacking trip ….hmmm maybe not 100% backpacking but rather a mix of staycation + exploring + backpacking Trip. And this time I had a perfect destination figured out !!

Destiny :- nope, it’s not a typo or spell error. I guess it’s was in my destiny to visit Oaxaca !! And in particular, Huatulco, Puerto Escondido and Mazunte

The Background: - on my several prior trips to Yucatan, Mexico - I had always wandered about a backpacking trip to Tulum, and when it was time to plan for one, I started with planning for Tulum. as you may have read, there have been numerous cases of crime in the recent times here + on my last visit to Tulum, I gathered an impression that it’s more touristy and pricy now as compared to what it used to be 10-12 years back. and yes, it’s taken over by tuluminati. I started to look for an alternate location with Tulum vibes and came across several mentions of Puerto Escondido and Mazunte over the social media. it was then while surfin facebook feeds that I came across a post of a magnificent house, on the top of a hill with infinity pools merging into a beautiful clear blue ocean. At this very first glance - I ’wanted’ to live here!! Imagine logging in to your zoom meeting with this real world background and the amazing view from this property. With some research I found out that this house was in a place called Port Angel near Huatulco. I reached out to some realtors to get the details and pricing but unfortunately, as any other gorgeous beautiful house in an amazing location, it was SOLD. And this added to my interest to go visit this amazing beautiful place ( and maybe I’ll find a house that I would want to live in here!!)

So for the next couple of weeks I did some more reading and finally made up my mind to fly out here, stay here as a “Local” and experience what’s it like to live in a place what people call as Heaven! BTW some folks even referred it as way-too-cool

The Planning: there’s just more to it than booking a hotel and a flight ticket!!! specially when I was dependent on a good internet/wifi to work remotely during the week. Oct to March is a HIGH season for Huatulco and as one would expect, all good accommodations were taken. Working with a limited inventory PLUS a few prerequisites ( internet, seperate bathroom and possibly a kitchen) - it was a tough process!

l will share more about this planning process ( and how to get local Mexican currency) in a separate post , for now let’s get ready to fly to one of the most amazing place with beautiful beaches and sunsets every single day - Huatulco, Oaxaca

I am a person of few words … and tons of clicks 😎and In this series of blogs ( or should I say Plogs) , I will share with you all that I captured though my IPhone lens and the memories I gathered during this journey

Flying in Huatulco

Airline Tip - Found a cheap one way flight to Huatulco (HUX) via Mexico city (MEX) on Expedia. Got the cheapest option ‘Light’ and added all the extra ( still cheaper than the bundle) !! That extra $ for the front row VIP seats was worth it to be able to deplane and clear immigration & Customs ahead of the crowd

1st thing - FIRST: shopped the duty free store on the DFW airport- needed to make sure I carry my favorite bourbon in the land to tequilas and Mezcal’s

I have a 3+ hours transit time at MEX and which felt ‘Short’ browsing through all the shops, local cafes and eateries on this domestic terminal.

Got to the immigration fast , walked out of the airport for a bit and then through security into the domestic terminal ( they let me through with a bottle of alcohol in a sealed dutyfree bag) . The domestic terminal was like visiting a mercado— shops everywhere . There are also some good cafes and food stalls, a 7eleven

The small hole-in-the-wall bars at one end of the shops even had B1G1 or 2x1 as said in Mexico

departing MEX and an hour long flight to Huatulco

Aerial view of Hautulco

Arriving Huatulco

HUX is a smaller airport ( with thatched roof and a single runway ) there’s free wifi and a few restaurants/shops ( during departures). It was a breeze to walk out of the airport after collecting the checked in bags - in less that 20 mins

after exiting the airport, I did , what a Huatulco local would do!!! Instead to taking the ’taxi’ ( yes, it’s not referred as cab here) from stand inside, I walked about 10 mins to the xoxo store outside and got a taxi here to the town for about 180 pesos

there are several other options . You can take a private taxi from inside the airport or outside from xoxo store. You can share a taxi to Huatulco ( or Puerto Escondido or Mazunte) or even take a local collectivso ( not recommended for your 1st trip or if you have some luggage). There are local delfín and SUR buses to Puerto Escondido as well

Coming next - Huatulco city , beach , nightlife and the Oaxaca cuisine
